Introduced in iOS 17, NameDrop is an extension of Apple’s AirDrop technology designed to make networking effortless. By simply bringing the top of your iPhone in close physical proximity to another user’s iPhone or Apple Watch, a glowing animation appears on both screens, instantly prompting you to exchange contact posters, phone numbers, and email addresses. It fundamentally replaces the traditional business card exchange.
However, this physical proximity trigger can cause significant friction in everyday situations. If you frequently carry two iPhones (e.g., a personal phone and a work phone) in the same pocket or bag, they will continuously trigger the NameDrop animation and vibrate against each other. Furthermore, in crowded environments or on public transit, accidental bumps against a stranger’s device can prompt unwanted contact-sharing requests. If you prefer to manually manage your contacts and want to prevent accidental digital handshakes, you can completely disable the NameDrop feature.
Why Disable NameDrop on iPhone?
Consider disabling this feature if you experience the following issues:
- Multi-Device Interference: Users who carry two iPhones constantly battle the proximity sensors triggering false NameDrop requests whenever the phones touch.
- Accidental Triggers: Placing your phone on a table next to a friend’s device can trigger the glowing animation and interrupt whatever you were doing on screen.
- Privacy and Security: While NameDrop requires explicit user confirmation to actually transmit data, disabling the prompt entirely prevents any possibility of an accidental tap sharing your personal information.
How to Turn Off ‘NameDrop’ (Contact Sharing) on iPhone
The toggle to disable NameDrop is located within the AirDrop settings menu on your iPhone. Note: This setting requires iOS 17 or later.
- Unlock your iPhone and open the Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap on General.
- Tap on AirDrop.
- Look for the section titled “Start Sharing By”.
- Locate the toggle switch for Bringing Devices Together.
- Switch the toggle to the Off position (it will turn grey).
Once disabled, holding your iPhone next to another Apple device will no longer trigger the NameDrop animation or prompt a contact exchange. You can still utilize standard AirDrop to send files or share contacts manually by selecting the specific device from your Share Sheet.
