Microsoft has recently integrated its flagship artificial intelligence assistant, Copilot, directly into the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, including Microsoft Excel. Copilot in Excel is designed to help users generate complex formulas, analyze datasets, create pivot tables, and visualize trends simply by typing natural language prompts into a sidebar chat interface.
While this AI integration can accelerate data analysis for some, it is not suitable for all environments. In strict corporate sectors handling highly sensitive financial data, HIPAA-compliant healthcare records, or proprietary trade secrets, allowing an AI assistant to scan and analyze spreadsheet contents represents a massive data governance risk. Additionally, veteran Excel users who rely on precise, manual formula creation often find the Copilot sidebar intrusive and distracting. If your organization requires strict data isolation, or if you simply prefer a traditional spreadsheet experience, you can completely disable Copilot in Microsoft Excel.
Why Disable Copilot in Microsoft Excel?
There are several critical reasons to restrict AI access within your spreadsheet application:
- Data Security and Compliance: Many compliance frameworks strictly prohibit feeding sensitive customer data or financial projections into generative AI models, even those hosted within corporate tenants.
- Accuracy Concerns: AI models can hallucinate or misinterpret complex data relationships. Relying on Copilot to generate critical financial formulas can introduce catastrophic errors into a spreadsheet.
- Interface Distraction: Removing the Copilot button and sidebar reclaims valuable screen real estate and ensures a distraction-free environment for manual data entry.
How to Turn Off ‘Copilot’ in Microsoft Excel
If you are using a personal Microsoft 365 subscription, you can disable the connected AI experiences directly within the Excel application settings. For enterprise users, this must usually be handled by IT administrators via the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.
- Open Microsoft Excel on your Windows PC.
- Click on File in the top-left corner of the ribbon.
- Select Options at the bottom of the left-hand menu.
- In the Excel Options window, click on Trust Center in the left sidebar, then click the Trust Center Settings… button.
- Select Privacy Options in the left pane, and then click on the Privacy Settings… button.
- Scroll down the list of connected experiences until you find the section related to Experiences that analyze your content (or specifically referring to Copilot/AI features depending on your exact build version).
- Uncheck the box that says Turn on experiences that analyze your content.
- Click OK on all open dialogue boxes and restart Microsoft Excel.
Once you restart the application, the Copilot button will disappear from your Excel ribbon. The application will no longer send your spreadsheet data to Microsoft’s AI models for analysis, ensuring your financial and numerical data remains entirely private and processed locally.
