When you download a new application from the Google Play Store on Android, you may notice a feature quietly working in the background called App Install Optimization. This telemetry-based system monitors exactly which parts of an application you use immediately after opening it for the first time. Google aggregates this data from millions of users to determine which assets and code blocks should be prioritised during future downloads, theoretically speeding up the installation process for everyone.
While this crowdsourced optimization relies on anonymous data and does not collect personal information like your name or email, it is fundamentally a form of behavioural tracking. The Play Store is actively recording how you navigate a newly installed app and sending that telemetry back to Google servers. Why Disable App Install Optimization?
There are valid reasons to opt out of this Google Play Store feature:
- Privacy and Telemetry: Opting out prevents Google from monitoring your initial interactions, taps, and navigation paths within newly downloaded applications.
- Background Processing: Although the impact is minimal, disabling the feature stops the Play Store service from dedicating background CPU cycles and network bandwidth to uploading telemetry logs.

How to Turn Off ‘App Install Optimization’ on Android
Google provides a direct toggle to disable this telemetry feature within the primary settings menu of the Google Play Store application.
- Open the Google Play Store app on your Android device.
- Tap on your Profile Picture (or initial) located in the top-right corner of the screen.
- From the drop-down menu, tap on Settings.
- Expand the General section by tapping on it.
- Locate the toggle switch labelled App install optimization.
- Switch the toggle to the Off position.
