How to Completely Disable ‘Vocal Shortcuts’ on iOS 18

With the release of iOS 18, Apple introduced Vocal Shortcuts, a powerful accessibility feature designed to let users trigger specific actions or run complex Shortcuts simply by speaking a custom phrase. Unlike Siri, which requires the standard wake word, Vocal Shortcuts constantly monitor your microphone for your specific pre-recorded sound or phrase to instantly execute a command.

While this is an incredible tool for users with mobility or speech impairments, having your iPhone constantly listening for a highly specific, custom audio trigger can lead to false positives. If you accidentally trigger a Vocal Shortcut during a regular conversation, or if you simply prefer not to have your device running continuous local audio analysis in the background, you can completely disable the feature.

Why Disable Vocal Shortcuts?

Consider the following reasons for turning off Vocal Shortcuts on your iPhone:

  • False Positives: Custom phrases or sounds can easily be misinterpreted during loud conversations or while listening to media, causing your iPhone to unexpectedly launch apps or run scripts.
  • Battery Consumption: Although the audio processing is highly optimised and handled on-device, continuous background microphone monitoring will inevitably consume a small amount of battery life.
  • Privacy Peace of Mind: Disabling the feature ensures that your microphone is not actively scanning ambient audio for trigger phrases.

How to Turn Off ‘Vocal Shortcuts’ on iOS 18

Because Vocal Shortcuts are classified as an accessibility tool, you will not find the toggle in the standard Siri or Shortcuts menus. You must navigate to the Accessibility settings to turn the feature off.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
  3. Scroll down to the Speech section (or the Physical and Motor section, depending on your exact iOS version).
  4. Tap on Vocal Shortcuts.
  5. At the top of the screen, toggle the master switch for Vocal Shortcuts to the Off position.

Disabling this master toggle immediately suspends the background audio monitoring. Your iPhone will retain your pre-recorded phrases and associated shortcuts in case you decide to re-enable the feature later, but it will no longer listen for or react to your custom vocal triggers.
