Windows 11 includes a feature called “Do Not Disturb” (formerly known as Focus Assist). By default, the operating system attempts to intelligently guess when you need to concentrate. It will automatically silence all incoming notifications, emails, and calendar alerts if you start playing a full-screen game, connect an external monitor, or launch a PowerPoint presentation.
While this is incredibly useful for preventing embarrassing popups during a corporate presentation, it is disastrous if you rely on critical, time-sensitive alerts. If you are an IT administrator monitoring server health, or a day trader waiting for a crucial price alert, simply maximizing your charting software to full screen might trigger the Do Not Disturb automatic rule. Windows will silently swallow the alert, and you will miss the critical event. If you want absolute, deterministic control over your notifications and refuse to let the operating system guess when you are “busy,” you must completely disable these automatic rules.
Disabling Automatic Rules via System Settings
You can turn off all heuristic and automatic triggers for Do Not Disturb directly from the notification menu.
- Click the Start button on your taskbar and click the gear icon to open the Settings app.
- In the left-hand navigation sidebar, ensure System is selected.
- Click on Notifications in the main panel.
- Look for the section labelled Turn on do not disturb automatically. Click anywhere on this row to expand the section.
- You will see a list of checkboxes detailing all the automatic triggers:
- During these times
- When duplicating my display
- When playing a game
- When using an app in full-screen mode
- For the first hour after a Windows feature update
- Completely uncheck every single box in this list.
The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will no longer attempt to intelligently silence your system. If you receive an urgent email or a Slack message while playing a full-screen game or presenting a slide deck, the notification banner will forcefully appear exactly as requested. You will only ever enter Do Not Disturb mode if you manually click the button in your Notification Center.
