On almost all modern Android smartphones, the default launcher includes a dedicated screen called “Google Discover.” If you swipe all the way to the left-most page of your home screen, you are immediately presented with a massive, algorithmically generated news feed. This feed is filled with articles, weather updates, sports scores, and advertisements tailored to your recent search history.
While some users enjoy this personalized news stream, it is a massive distraction for others. If you are trying to minimize screen time, having an infinite scrolling feed of clickbait articles permanently attached to your home screen is highly counterproductive. Furthermore, the Discover feed constantly runs background data queries to keep the news fresh, which can slowly drain your battery and consume mobile data. If you want a minimalist, distraction-free home screen layout where swiping left simply bounces you back to your icons, you must completely disable the Google Discover feed.
Disabling Google Discover via Home Settings
The method to disable this feature is slightly different depending on your phone manufacturer (e.g., Google Pixel vs. Samsung Galaxy), but the option is always located within the launcher’s core settings.
- Navigate to your primary Android Home Screen.
- Find an empty space on the screen (where there are no app icons or widgets) and press and hold your finger on the glass for two seconds.
- The screen will zoom out, and a menu will appear at the bottom. Tap on Home settings.
- Look for a toggle switch labelled Swipe to access the Google app (on Samsung Galaxy devices, this may be labelled “Add media page to Home screen” or “Google Discover”).
- Tap the toggle switch to turn it Off.
Verifying the Change
The change applies instantly to the launcher.
- Press your Home button to return to your main screen.
- Attempt to swipe from left to right (to access the left-most screen).
- The screen will simply stop or bounce. The Google Discover feed is completely gone.
Your Android home screen is now an isolated, distraction-free environment. You can still access Google Search and your personalized news feed at any time by manually opening the dedicated “Google” app from your app drawer, but it will no longer ambush you when you accidentally swipe too far on your home screen.
