macOS relies heavily on the Notification Centre to deliver alerts from your applications. By default, whenever you receive an email, a calendar reminder, or a software update prompt, a large rectangular banner aggressively slides into the top-right corner of your screen, accompanied by an audible chime.
While notifications are essential for staying connected, they are the absolute enemy of deep focus. If you are recording a podcast, presenting a slideshow over a screen share, or simply trying to write code without distractions, a sudden banner popping up revealing the contents of a private iMessage is both unprofessional and incredibly annoying. If you want to force your Mac to act like a dedicated workstation rather than a massive smartphone, you must completely disable these notification banners system-wide.
Disabling Notification Banners via Focus Settings
The fastest and most robust way to globally silence all notifications without manually adjusting the settings for every single installed application is to permanently enable the “Do Not Disturb” Focus mode.
- Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of your Mac’s screen and select System Settings….
- Scroll down the left-hand navigation sidebar and click on Focus.
- In the main panel, click on the profile named Do Not Disturb.
- Ensure that the “Allowed People” and “Allowed Apps” lists are completely empty (or configure them to only allow absolute emergencies, like phone calls from your boss).
- At the top of the menu, you will see a toggle switch to turn Do Not Disturb on, but we want it permanently active. Scroll down to the “Set a Schedule” section.
- Click the Add Schedule button and select Time.
- Configure the schedule to run from 00:00 to 23:59, every single day of the week.
- Click Done.
How Your Mac Behaves Now
Because you have scheduled Do Not Disturb to run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, your Mac will never again display a slide-in banner or play a notification chime. The operating system will still silently collect your notifications and deposit them in the hidden Notification Centre (accessible by clicking the date/time in the menu bar), but they will never interrupt your active screen.
