Microsoft Word includes a highly aggressive spell-checker and grammar engine that actively scans your document as you type. Whenever it detects a potential error, it violently underlines the text with a jagged, bright red or blue squiggly line. While this is incredibly helpful for catching typos in a standard essay, it is a catastrophic distraction for specific types of professional writing.
If you are a programmer writing a technical specification document filled with code snippets, variable names, and acronyms, Word will paint your entire document in red lines because it does not understand programming syntax. Similarly, if you are a fantasy author drafting a novel filled with invented locations, unique character names, and fictional languages, the constant visual noise of red underlines can completely break your creative flow. To restore a clean, distraction-free writing environment and force Word to behave like a traditional text editor, you must completely disable the automatic spelling and grammar checks.
Disabling the Spell-Checker Globally via Word Options
You can turn off the “as-you-type” scanning engine entirely, removing all squiggly lines from your current document and all future documents.
- Open the Microsoft Word desktop application.
- Bypass the Start Screen by clicking Blank document to enter the main editing interface.
- Look at the main menu ribbon at the top of the screen and click on File.
- Scroll to the absolute bottom of the left-hand blue sidebar and click on Options.
- A new Options window will appear. In the left-hand menu, click on Proofing.
- Scroll down the main panel until you find the section labelled “When correcting spelling and grammar in Word.”
- You will see several checkboxes. To kill the visual underlines entirely, you must completely uncheck the following options:
- Check spelling as you type
- Mark grammar errors as you type
- Frequently confused words
- Click the OK button at the bottom of the window to save your changes.
The change takes effect instantly. The moment you close the Options menu, every single red and blue squiggly line in your document will vanish. You are now free to type code, acronyms, and fictional languages without your word processor screaming at you. (Note: You can still manually run a spell-check at any time by pressing F7 or navigating to the Review tab on the ribbon and clicking Spelling & Grammar).
