How to Completely Disable ‘AutoSave’ (Cloud Synchronization) in Microsoft Office Apps

If you use Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint in conjunction with a Microsoft 365 subscription, you have likely noticed a small toggle switch in the extreme top-left corner of the window labelled “AutoSave.” By default, if you save a document to OneDrive or a corporate SharePoint server, this toggle turns on automatically. AutoSave instantly syncs every single keystroke you type directly to the cloud in real-time, completely overriding the traditional “File > Save” workflow.

While this prevents data loss if your computer crashes, it fundamentally breaks the traditional editing workflow. If you want to open an existing financial spreadsheet, aggressively modify the numbers to test a hypothetical scenario, and then close the file without saving the changes, AutoSave makes this impossible. The moment you type a new number, the original file in the cloud is permanently overwritten with your experimental data. If you prefer strict, manual control over when your files are committed to the hard drive or the cloud, you must completely disable the AutoSave engine.

Disabling AutoSave Globally via Office Settings

You can force Microsoft Office to revert to the classic, manual saving paradigm across all your documents.

  1. Open your preferred Microsoft Office desktop application (e.g., Word or Excel).
  2. Bypass the Start Screen by clicking Blank document to enter the main editing interface.
  3. Look at the main menu ribbon at the top of the screen and click on File (in the top-left corner).
  4. Scroll to the absolute bottom of the left-hand blue sidebar and click on Options.
  5. A new Options window will appear. In the left-hand menu, click on Save.
  6. In the main panel, look at the very top section labelled “Save documents.”
  7. You will see a checkbox labelled AutoSave files stored in the Cloud by default in Word/Excel.
  8. Click the checkbox to completely uncheck it.
  9. Click the OK button at the bottom of the window to save your changes.

The change takes effect immediately. The next time you open a document stored in OneDrive, the AutoSave toggle switch in the top-left corner will be firmly set to “Off.” You are now free to experiment with your documents and close them without saving, safe in the knowledge that your original cloud file remains untouched until you explicitly press Ctrl + S.
