How to Completely Disable ‘Activity History’ (Timeline/Jump Lists) in Windows 11

Windows 11 constantly monitors everything you do. Every document you open, every website you visit in Edge, and every application you launch is recorded by a background service called “Activity History.” Originally introduced in Windows 10 as part of the “Timeline” feature, this telemetry is used to populate Jump Lists (the recent files that appear when you right-click an app on the Taskbar) and to allow you to resume your work across multiple connected Microsoft devices.

While this is convenient for users heavily invested in the Microsoft cloud ecosystem, it is a massive privacy concern for everyone else. If you share your computer with family members or use your laptop for presentations, you do not want your entire browsing and document history readily accessible with a single right-click on the taskbar. Furthermore, constantly logging file paths to a local database creates unnecessary background disk I/O. If you want Windows to completely forget what you were doing the millisecond you close an application, you must completely disable the Activity History tracker.

Disabling Activity History via Privacy Settings

Microsoft allows you to stop this local logging and clear the existing database directly from the Privacy & Security menu.

  1. Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + i).
  2. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Privacy & security.
  3. Scroll down to the “Windows permissions” section and click on Activity history.
  4. You will see a master toggle switch labelled Store my activity history on this device.
  5. Click the switch to turn it Off. (This stops future tracking).
  6. Immediately below the toggle, look for the “Clear activity history” section.
  7. Click the Clear button to wipe the existing database, ensuring no previously tracked files appear in your Jump Lists.

The tracking stops immediately. However, if you want to ensure that no recent files ever show up in your Start Menu or Taskbar again, you must also disable the visual representation of this data.

  1. Return to the main Personalization tab in the left-hand sidebar.
  2. Click on Start.
  3. Turn off the toggle switches for Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer.

Your Windows 11 installation is now completely amnesiac. It will no longer build a secret database of your daily activities, and your taskbar icons will only show the specific tasks you manually pin to them.
