How to Completely Disable ‘AutoFit’ (Automatic Text Resizing) in Microsoft PowerPoint

When you create a slide in Microsoft PowerPoint and paste a large block of text into a textbox, the software immediately intervenes. If the text is too long to fit inside the physical boundaries of the placeholder, PowerPoint triggers a feature called “AutoFit.” It instantly shrinks your carefully chosen font size, squashes the line spacing, and forces all the text to squeeze into the box.

While this prevents text from spilling over the edge of the screen, it completely destroys presentation design consistency. A professional slide deck should maintain strict, uniform font sizes (e.g., 32pt for headers, 24pt for body text) across every single slide to ensure readability from the back of a room. If one slide shrinks its text to 14pt just because you added an extra bullet point, it looks incredibly unprofessional. If you want strict control over your typography and prefer the text to naturally overflow (so you can manually edit it down or move it to a new slide), you must completely disable the AutoFit engine.

Disabling AutoFit via PowerPoint Options

You can turn off this aggressive resizing behavior globally, ensuring that PowerPoint never alters your font sizes again.

1. Open the Microsoft PowerPoint desktop application.
2. Create a Blank Presentation to access the main editing interface.
3. Look at the main menu ribbon at the top of the screen and click on File.
4. Scroll to the absolute bottom of the left-hand blue sidebar and click on Options.
5. A new Options window will appear. In the left-hand menu, click on Proofing.
6. In the main panel, look for the “AutoCorrect options” section and click the AutoCorrect Options… button.
7. A complex dialogue box will open. Navigate to the AutoFormat As You Type tab at the top.
8. Look for the section labelled “Apply as you type” at the bottom of the window.
9. You will see two specific checkboxes controlling the resizing engine. Uncheck both of them:
   • AutoFit title text to placeholder
   • AutoFit body text to placeholder
10. Click the OK button to close the AutoCorrect menu, and click OK again to close the PowerPoint Options.

The changes take effect immediately. From now on, when you paste a massive paragraph into a textbox, your 24pt font will remain exactly 24pt. If the text is too long, it will simply spill out of the bottom of the box, visually alerting you that you have written too much and need to edit your content for a professional presentation.
