Microsoft PowerPoint includes an AI-driven layout assistant called “Designer” (previously known as Design Ideas). Whenever you insert a photo, a chart, or even just type a bulleted list onto a blank slide, a massive sidebar instantly flies out from the right side of your screen. This panel aggressively suggests entirely new, highly stylized layouts, color schemes, and stock imagery to “improve” your presentation.
While this is a fantastic tool for users who lack design skills and need to build a quick presentation from scratch, it is incredibly intrusive if you are working within a strict corporate template. If your company requires you to use specific fonts, margins, and branding guidelines, accidentally clicking a Designer suggestion will instantly destroy your formatting. If you already know exactly how you want your slides to look, you should completely disable these automatic suggestions.
Disabling the Designer Auto-Popups
You can turn off the automatic Designer sidebar directly from PowerPoint’s core settings menu.
- Open the Microsoft PowerPoint desktop application and create a new blank presentation.
- Look at the main menu ribbon at the top of the screen and click on File (in the top-left corner).
- Scroll down the blue sidebar on the left and click on Options (usually located at the very bottom).
- A new “PowerPoint Options” window will appear. It should open to the General tab by default. If it does not, click on General in the left-hand menu.
- Scroll down the main panel until you see a section labelled PowerPoint Designer.
- You will see a checkbox labelled Automatically show me design ideas.
- Click the checkbox to uncheck it.
- (Optional) If you also want to stop PowerPoint from suggesting new slide layouts when you first create a new file, uncheck the box labelled Automatically show me suggestions when I create a new presentation.
- Click the OK button at the bottom of the window to save your changes.
The next time you insert a massive high-resolution photograph onto your slide, PowerPoint will remain completely silent and passive, allowing you to manually crop and position the image exactly where your corporate template requires it.
