If you regularly work with multilingual documents in Microsoft Word, you may have encountered the “Mini Translator” feature. When this feature is active, simply pausing your mouse cursor over a foreign word for a fraction of a second causes a semi-transparent bubble to pop up on your screen. This bubble attempts to instantly translate the word into your default language.
While this sounds incredibly useful in theory, the implementation can be highly frustrating. If you are simply trying to read a document or move your cursor across the screen, these translation bubbles constantly flash into existence, obscuring the text underneath and breaking your concentration. If you prefer to translate text manually only when you specifically request it, you can easily turn this automated pop-up feature off.
Disabling the Mini Translator
The toggle for the Mini Translator is located directly within the main ribbon menu under the Review tab, not hidden deep in the advanced settings.
- Open the Microsoft Word desktop application and open a document.
- Look at the main ribbon menu across the top of the screen and click on the Review tab.
- In the “Language” group on the ribbon, click the button labelled Translate.
- A small dropdown menu will appear. Look at the bottom of this menu for the option labelled Mini Translator.
- If the Mini Translator is currently active, the icon next to it will be highlighted with a grey square. Click on Mini Translator to toggle it off.
The change takes effect instantly. You can test it by hovering your mouse over any text in your document; the screen should remain completely clear, with no translation bubbles appearing.
How to Manually Translate Text Afterwards
Disabling the pop-up bubble does not disable Word’s translation capabilities entirely. If you encounter a word or paragraph you actually need to translate, you can still do so deliberately.
Simply highlight the specific word or paragraph using your mouse. Then, go back to the Review tab, click Translate, and select Translate Selection. A dedicated sidebar will open on the right-hand side of your screen containing the translation, keeping your main document area completely unobstructed.
