How to Completely Disable ‘Pageless’ Mode and Return to Standard Pages in Google Docs

Google recently introduced a fundamental change to how Google Docs displays documents, calling it “Pageless” mode. In this format, the traditional borders of an A4 or Letter-sized piece of paper completely disappear. The document becomes one infinite, continuous scroll that automatically expands to fit the width of your monitor, and tables can stretch endlessly to the right.

While Pageless mode is fantastic if you are drafting text specifically to be published on a website, it is a nightmare if you actually need to print the document or export it as a standard PDF. In Pageless mode, you cannot see where page breaks occur, you cannot add headers or footers, and you cannot format columns. If you are writing a traditional academic essay or a formal business letter, you need to turn Pageless mode off and return to standard “Pages” format.

Reverting to the Standard Pages Format

Switching back to the traditional view with visible page margins is a simple process, and you can even set it as your default preference going forward.

  1. Open your document in Google Docs.
  2. Look at the main menu bar at the top of the screen and click on File.
  3. Scroll down the dropdown menu and select Page setup (it is usually near the bottom, just above “Print”).
  4. A settings window will appear in the centre of your screen. Look at the very top of this window; you will see two tabs: Pages and Pageless.
  5. Click on the Pages tab.
  6. You will now see the traditional formatting options, including Margins, Paper Size (e.g., A4 or Letter), and Page Colour. Adjust these to your liking if necessary.
  7. Click the blue OK button at the bottom right of the window.

Your document will immediately instantly revert to the traditional view, displaying the grey background around the distinct white pages, allowing you to clearly see where one page ends and the next begins.

Setting “Pages” as Your Permanent Default

If you never want to use the infinite scroll feature and want to ensure every new document you create starts with traditional page borders, you can lock this setting in.

  1. Open the Page setup menu again (File > Page setup).
  2. Ensure you are on the Pages tab.
  3. Before you click OK, look in the bottom-left corner of the window and click the Set as default button.
  4. Click OK.

From this point forward, every brand-new document you create in your Google Account will automatically open in the standard Pages format, completely ignoring the new Pageless design.
