If you look at the absolute top-left corner of your Google Chrome browser window (or top-right on Windows), you will see a small, downwards-pointing arrow icon situated right next to the minimise/maximise buttons. This is the “Tab Search” button. When clicked, it opens a dropdown menu displaying a list of all your currently open tabs across all browser windows, allowing you to search through them.
While this is incredibly useful for users who keep dozens of tabs open simultaneously, it is completely redundant if you only ever browse with three or four tabs open at a time. The icon takes up valuable space in the title bar and can be clicked accidentally when trying to move the window. If you prefer a cleaner interface, you can completely remove this button using Chrome’s hidden developer settings.
Accessing the Chrome Flags Menu
Because Tab Search is baked into the core interface of the browser, there is no simple toggle switch in the standard Settings menu to turn it off. You must dive into Chrome’s experimental “Flags” menu to disable the underlying code.
- Open the Google Chrome browser on your computer.
- Click on the main URL address bar at the top of the screen and delete whatever is currently there.
- Type the following exact text into the address bar and press Enter:
chrome://flags - You will immediately see a warning stating that these are experimental features. This is normal. At the top of the page, there is a dedicated search bar specifically for finding these hidden settings.
Disabling the Tab Search Feature
Now that you are in the Flags menu, you must locate the specific flag that controls the arrow icon.
- Click into the search bar at the top of the
chrome://flagspage. - Type Tab Search.
- The list will filter down. Look for the main setting titled exactly Enable Tab Search.
- To the right of the setting, you will see a dropdown menu that is currently set to “Default”.
- Click that dropdown menu and change the setting to Disabled.
- The moment you make this change, a large blue Relaunch button will appear at the absolute bottom of your screen. Click this button to instantly restart the browser.
When Chrome reopens, the small dropdown arrow icon will be completely gone from your title bar, giving your browser a much cleaner, more traditional appearance.
Note: Google frequently updates the Flags menu. In some extremely recent versions of Chrome, they occasionally remove the ability to disable this specific flag as they make the feature permanently mandatory. If the “Enable Tab Search” flag does not appear in your search results, your version of Chrome has unfortunately locked the icon in place.
