One of the most convenient features of an iPhone is its ability to remember Wi-Fi networks and automatically reconnect to them whenever you are in range. This saves you from having to enter passwords every time you visit a friend’s house or your local coffee shop. However, this feature can become incredibly frustrating when your phone connects to a public network that requires a web login (like a hotel or airport), or a network with an extremely weak, unusable signal.
When this happens, your phone thinks it has an internet connection, but nothing actually loads. To fix this, you do not need to “Forget” the network completely (which would delete the password); you simply need to disable the auto-join feature for that specific, problematic connection.
Disabling Auto-Join for a Specific Network
You can adjust this setting on a per-network basis. This means you can keep auto-join enabled for your fast home network, while disabling it for the slow, spotty connection at your local gym.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap on Wi-Fi near the top of the menu.
- Ensure your Wi-Fi is turned on. In the list of networks, find the specific network that is causing you trouble (you must be physically near the network, or currently connected to it, for it to appear in this main list).
- Tap the small blue “i” icon (the information button) located on the far right side of that specific network’s name.
- You will see a toggle switch labelled Auto-Join. Tap this switch to turn it off (it will change from green to grey).
From now on, your iPhone will still remember the password for this network. If you ever want to use it, you can simply open your Wi-Fi settings and tap the network name to connect manually. However, your phone will never automatically force you onto that network in the background again.
Using the “Ask to Join Networks” Feature
If you find that your phone is constantly trying to connect to random, open Wi-Fi networks as you walk down the street, you can change your global settings to prevent this behaviour entirely.
- Go back to the main Settings > Wi-Fi screen.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the active networks list.
- Tap on Ask to Join Networks.
- Change the setting from “Ask” or “Notify” to Off.
With this setting turned off, your iPhone will only connect to networks it already knows (and where Auto-Join is enabled). It will completely ignore all other networks until you manually select them from the list.
