How to Force Quit an Unresponsive Application on a Mac

macOS is generally a stable and reliable operating system, but even the best Macs occasionally encounter software issues. When an application freezes, crashes, or shows the infamous spinning “beach ball” cursor, it will often refuse to close normally. Clicking the red ‘X’ or selecting “Quit” from the menu bar will have absolutely no effect.

When a program completely stops responding, you must use the Force Quit feature to terminate the process at the system level. This immediately shuts down the application and recovers your system’s resources.

Method 1: The Keyboard Shortcut (Fastest)

The quickest and most common way to close a frozen application is by using the dedicated Force Quit keyboard shortcut. This is the macOS equivalent to the Ctrl+Alt+Delete command on a Windows PC.

  1. Press and hold the following three keys simultaneously: Command + Option + Escape.
  2. A small window titled “Force Quit Applications” will appear in the centre of your screen.
  3. Scroll through the list and click on the application that is frozen. The system will usually add “(Not Responding)” next to the name of the problematic app.
  4. Click the blue Force Quit button in the bottom right corner of the window.
  5. A confirmation dialogue will appear. Click Force Quit again to terminate the app.

Method 2: Using the Apple Menu

If you cannot remember the keyboard shortcut, you can access the exact same Force Quit window using your mouse via the main system menu.

  1. Click the Apple logo located in the extreme top-left corner of your screen.
  2. Select Force Quit… from the dropdown menu.
  3. The Force Quit Applications window will appear.
  4. Select the unresponsive program and click the Force Quit button.

Method 3: Force Quitting from the Dock

If you are actively working and do not want to open a new menu window, you can force close an application directly from the Dock at the bottom of your screen.

  1. Locate the icon of the frozen application in your Dock.
  2. Hold down the Option (Alt) key on your keyboard.
  3. While holding the Option key, Right-click (or two-finger tap) on the application’s icon in the Dock.
  4. The standard “Quit” option at the bottom of the context menu will change to Force Quit.
  5. Click Force Quit to instantly kill the application.

Method 4: Using Activity Monitor (Advanced)

Occasionally, an application might have invisible background processes that have crashed, causing your Mac to run slowly even though no obvious window is frozen. In these cases, you can use the Activity Monitor to hunt down and kill the process.

  1. Open Finder, navigate to Applications > Utilities, and open Activity Monitor. (Or search for it using Spotlight).
  2. Click the CPU tab at the top of the window.
  3. Find the unresponsive application in the list. Problematic processes are usually highlighted in red and labelled “(Not Responding)”.
  4. Click on the process to highlight it.
  5. Click the X icon (Stop) located in the toolbar at the top of the window.
  6. Select Force Quit from the prompt that appears.

Important Warning: Force quitting an application terminates it instantly without initiating its normal shutdown procedures. Any unsaved work within that specific application will be lost. You should only use Force Quit when an app is genuinely frozen and cannot be closed normally.
