Running out of storage space is a common issue for Mac users, and one of the biggest culprits is the Trash. When you delete a file on your Mac, it is not permanently erased from your hard drive immediately. Instead, macOS moves it to the Trash bin, where it continues to consume valuable disk space until you manually empty it.
If you frequently forget to empty your Trash, you might find yourself suddenly out of storage when trying to download a large file or update your operating system. Fortunately, macOS includes a built-in feature that can automate this process, ensuring that deleted files are permanently removed after a set period of time.
How the Automatic Trash Deletion Works
When you enable this feature, macOS will automatically and permanently delete any item that has been sitting in the Trash for more than 30 days. This gives you a generous one-month grace period to recover any files you might have deleted by mistake.
It is important to understand that this setting applies to individual files based on when they were moved to the Trash, not when you enabled the setting. For example, if you move a file to the Trash today, it will be deleted exactly 30 days from now, regardless of when other files in the Trash were deleted.
How to Enable Automatic Empty Trash in Finder
The setting to automate your Trash is located within the Finder preferences.
- Click anywhere on your desktop to ensure Finder is the active application (you will see “Finder” in the top-left corner of your menu bar).
- Click on Finder in the menu bar and select Settings (or Preferences if you are using an older version of macOS).
- In the Finder Settings window that appears, click on the Advanced tab (the gear icon).
- Locate the checkbox labelled Remove items from the Trash after 30 days and check it.
A warning prompt will appear asking you to confirm your decision. It will remind you that items removed from the Trash cannot be recovered. Click Turn On to confirm.
Alternative: Enabling it via Storage Management
You can also enable this feature through the macOS Storage Management tool, which is particularly useful if you are currently trying to free up space across your entire system.
- Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner and select System Settings.
- Navigate to General in the sidebar, then click on Storage.
- Look for the Recommendations section at the top of the Storage menu.
- Find the option labelled Empty Trash Automatically and click the Turn On button next to it.
- Confirm your choice in the pop-up warning dialogue.
With this feature enabled, you no longer need to worry about manually emptying your Trash. Your Mac will silently manage your deleted files in the background, keeping your storage drive clean and optimised.
