If you are playing a racing game like Forza Horizon or a third-person action game like Elden Ring on your Windows 11 computer, using a keyboard and mouse is an incredibly frustrating, suboptimal experience. You need a gamepad. Because Microsoft owns both Windows and Xbox, the Xbox Wireless Controller is the absolute best, most natively supported controller you can use for PC gaming.
You can connect an Xbox controller to a Windows 11 PC using three different methods: a physical USB cable, a wireless Bluetooth connection, or the proprietary Xbox Wireless Adapter.
Method 1: The USB Cable (The Zero-Latency Method)
If you are playing a highly competitive game (like Rocket League or Call of Duty) where milliseconds matter, you should not use a wireless connection. Bluetooth introduces a tiny amount of input lag. A physical wire is the fastest and most reliable method.
- Determine what kind of port your controller has. If you have a newer Xbox Series X|S controller, you need a USB-C cable. If you have an older Xbox One controller, you need a Micro-USB cable.
- Plug one end of the cable into the top of the controller.
- Plug the other end of the cable into a USB port on your Windows 11 PC.
- Wait three seconds.
That is literally the entire process. Windows 11 has the Xbox drivers permanently baked into the operating system. The Xbox logo button on the controller will instantly light up solid white, and the controller is ready to use in any game.
Method 2: Bluetooth (The Wireless Method)
If you want to sit back on your couch and play PC games on your television, you need a wireless connection. Note: The original launch-day Xbox One controllers from 2013 do not have Bluetooth. If the plastic casing around the glowing Xbox button is glossy black (different from the matte plastic on the face of the controller), it does not have Bluetooth. If the plastic is all one continuous, matte piece, you are good to go.
Step 1: Put the Controller in Pairing Mode
- Press and hold the glowing Xbox button in the center of the controller to turn it on.
- Look at the very top edge of the controller (near the left bumper/trigger). You will see a tiny, circular button.
- Press and hold that tiny circular button for 3 seconds.
- The glowing Xbox button will begin flashing rapidly. It is now broadcasting a Bluetooth signal.
Step 2: Connect via Windows 11 Settings
- On your PC, click the Start Button and click the gear icon to open Settings.
- Look at the left-hand navigation menu and click on Bluetooth & devices.
- Ensure the master Bluetooth toggle switch is turned ON.
- Click the large Add device button.
- A black window will pop up. Click the top option: Bluetooth (Audio devices, mice, keyboards, phones, etc.).
- Windows will scan the room. Within a few seconds, “Xbox Wireless Controller” will appear in the list.
- Click on it.
The rapidly flashing Xbox button will instantly turn solid white. The controller is paired. (Note: You only have to do this once. The next time you want to play, simply turn the controller on, and it will automatically connect to the PC).
Method 3: The Xbox Wireless Adapter (The Expensive Method)
Bluetooth is great, but it has a limited range and can sometimes suffer from audio stuttering if you plug a gaming headset directly into the bottom of the Xbox controller. If you want the flawless, high-bandwidth connection of an actual Xbox console, you must buy Microsoft’s proprietary USB adapter.
- Purchase the official Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows 10/11 (it looks like a black USB thumb drive).
- Plug the adapter into your PC.
- Press the tiny button on the side of the USB adapter. A small white light will begin flashing.
- Turn on your Xbox Controller and press the circular pairing button on the top (as described in Method 2).
The adapter and the controller will instantly find each other and lock on. This method bypasses your computer’s Bluetooth card entirely, providing much lower latency and supporting up to 8 controllers simultaneously for local multiplayer games.
