How to Connect AirPods to Windows 11

Apple AirPods are engineered to connect to iPhones and MacBooks instantly and flawlessly, utilizing Apple’s proprietary W1 or H1 wireless chips. However, at their core, AirPods are still standard Bluetooth headphones. You can easily pair them with a Windows 11 PC to listen to music, watch movies, or take Zoom calls.

Because you are leaving the Apple ecosystem, the pairing process is manual, and you will lose access to premium features like automatic ear detection (the music will not pause when you take an AirPod out). But the core audio functionality will work perfectly. Here is how to force the connection.

Step 1: Put the AirPods into “Pairing Mode”

If you just open the lid of the AirPods case near a Windows PC, absolutely nothing will happen. The PC cannot “see” the headphones because the AirPods are actively looking for the iPhone they are already paired to. You must manually force them into discoverable pairing mode.

  1. Place both AirPods securely inside the charging case.
  2. Open the lid of the charging case (do not take the AirPods out).
  3. Look at the back of the charging case. You will see a small, completely flush, circular button near the bottom.
  4. Press and hold that circular button on the back of the case for about 3 to 5 seconds.
  5. Look at the LED light on the case (it is either on the front of the case or under the lid, depending on your model). The light will change from green/amber to pulsing white.

The pulsing white light means the AirPods are broadcasting a generic Bluetooth signal and are desperately looking for a new device. You now have about 60 seconds to connect them to Windows.

Step 2: Connect via Windows 11 Settings

Now that the AirPods are broadcasting, you must tell Windows to scan the airwaves and lock onto the signal.

  1. On your Windows 11 PC, click the Start Button and click the gear icon to open Settings.
  2. Look at the left-hand navigation menu and click on Bluetooth & devices.
  3. At the very top of the screen, ensure the master Bluetooth toggle switch is turned ON.
  4. Click the large button labeled Add device (or “Add a device”).
  5. A black dialog box will appear asking what kind of device you want to add. Click the top option: Bluetooth (Audio devices, mice, keyboards, phones, etc.).
  6. Windows will begin scanning the room. Within a few seconds, “AirPods” (or “John’s AirPods Pro”) will appear in the list.
  7. Click on the AirPods in the list.

Windows will execute the digital handshake. The white pulsing light on the charging case will turn solid green, indicating a successful connection. You can now take the AirPods out of the case and put them in your ears.

Troubleshooting: The Sound is Terrible (The “Hands-Free” Glitch)

The most common issue when connecting AirPods to Windows is that the audio suddenly sounds like you are listening to music through a 1990s telephone line. This happens because Windows gets confused by the microphone.

Bluetooth does not have enough bandwidth to transmit high-definition stereo audio and transmit microphone data simultaneously. When you launch a Zoom call, Windows forcefully drops the audio quality from “Stereo” to a low-bandwidth “Hands-Free AG Audio” profile so the microphone can work.

How to fix it:

  1. Click the Speaker Icon in the bottom right corner of your Windows taskbar (next to the clock).
  2. Click the small arrow (or the “>” symbol) next to the volume slider to select your output device.
  3. You will likely see two options for your AirPods. One will say “Headphones (AirPods Stereo)” and the other will say “Headset (AirPods Hands-Free AG Audio)”.
  4. Select the “Stereo” option.

The high-definition audio will instantly return. (Note: If you are playing a video game and you want to use the AirPod microphones to talk to your team, you must suffer the terrible audio quality. If you want high-definition audio, you must use a separate, standalone USB microphone for your voice).
