How to Uninstall an App on Windows 11

If your hard drive is completely full, or if you accidentally downloaded a piece of bloatware that is slowing down your computer, you must uninstall the offending software. In older versions of Windows, deleting the icon from your desktop did absolutely nothing to remove the actual program files hidden deep within the C: drive.

You must use the official Windows uninstallation engine to properly rip the software out of the registry and delete all associated files. Windows 11 provides a few different ways to access this engine, ranging from the modern Settings menu to the legacy Control Panel.

Method 1: The Modern Settings Menu (The Best Way)

This is the standard, Microsoft-approved method for removing both modern apps (downloaded from the Microsoft Store) and classic legacy programs (downloaded from the web).

1. Click the Start Button (the Windows logo) and click the gear icon to open Settings.
2. Look at the left-hand navigation menu and click on Apps.
3. In the main right-hand panel, click on Installed apps.
4. You will now see a massive, alphabetical list of every single piece of software installed on your computer.
5. Scroll down the list (or use the search bar at the top) to find the specific app you want to destroy.
6. Look to the far right of the app’s name. You will see three horizontal dots. Click them.
7. A tiny drop-down menu will appear. Click Uninstall.
8. A confirmation pop-up will appear warning you that the app and its related info will be uninstalled. Click Uninstall again to confirm.

If it is a modern app, it will vanish instantly. If it is a legacy program, it might launch the software’s own custom uninstaller wizard, which will ask you to click “Next” a few times before completing the removal.

Method 2: The Start Menu Shortcut (The Fastest Way)

If the app you want to delete is already pinned to your Start menu, you do not need to dig through the Settings app to find it.

1. Click the Start Button.
2. Find the icon of the app you want to remove (either in the “Pinned” section or by clicking “All apps” in the top right corner).
3. Right-click directly on the app icon.
4. Click Uninstall from the context menu.

This will instantly jump you straight to the correct uninstallation wizard, bypassing all the intermediate menus.

Method 3: The Legacy Control Panel (For Stubborn Programs)

Sometimes, older software (like ancient printer drivers or legacy PC games from 2005) simply refuse to appear in the modern Windows 11 Settings menu. Microsoft still hides the old Windows 7-era Control Panel specifically for these stubborn programs.

1. Click the Start Button.
2. Immediately type the words Control Panel into the search bar.
3. Click the Control Panel app icon that appears in the search results.
4. Look for the section labeled “Programs.” Underneath it, click the blue link that says Uninstall a program.
5. You will see the classic, spreadsheet-style list of installed software.
6. Click on the stubborn program to highlight it.
7. Look at the menu bar directly above the list and click the Uninstall button.

Why Can’t I Uninstall Some Apps?

If you try to uninstall Microsoft Edge, the Xbox app, or Cortana, you will notice that the “Uninstall” button is completely greyed out and unclickable. This is intentional.

Microsoft considers these to be “Core System Components.” The operating system relies on them to function properly, and Windows 11 physically restricts you from deleting them through standard menus to prevent you from accidentally breaking the operating system. Removing them requires advanced PowerShell scripting, which is generally not recommended for average users.
