How to Show Hidden Files in Windows 11

Microsoft intentionally hides thousands of files and folders from the average Windows 11 user. This is a critical security measure designed to prevent you from accidentally deleting core operating system architecture, which would instantly destroy your computer and prevent it from booting.

However, if you are attempting to mod a video game, backup a specific save file, or clear the cache of a broken piece of software, you often need to access the hidden AppData folder located inside your user profile. To find these files, you must explicitly command Windows 11 to uncloak them.

Method 1: The Quick File Explorer Toggle (Fastest)

Windows 11 completely redesigned the File Explorer interface, making the process of unhiding files significantly easier than in previous versions of Windows.

1. Click the yellow File Explorer folder icon on your taskbar (or press the Windows Key + E).
2. Look at the ribbon menu at the absolute top of the window.
3. Click the View button (it has a small drop-down arrow next to it).
4. Move your mouse down to the bottom of the drop-down menu and hover over Show.
5. A secondary menu will slide out to the right. Click Hidden items.

A small checkmark will appear next to “Hidden items.” Instantly, any hidden files or folders in your current directory will appear. You can easily distinguish them from normal files because their icons are slightly faded or translucent.

Method 2: The Folder Options Menu (The Old School Way)

If you are accustomed to the older Windows 10 interface, or if the Quick Toggle fails to reveal deeply buried system files, you must use the legacy Folder Options menu.

1. Open File Explorer.
2. Look at the ribbon menu at the top of the window and click the three horizontal dots (located at the far right end of the ribbon).
3. Select Options from the drop-down menu.
4. A small, dense window will open. Click the View tab at the top of this window.
5. Look inside the “Advanced settings” box. You will see a small folder icon labeled “Hidden files and folders.”
6. Click the radio button next to Show hidden files, folders, and drives.
7. Click Apply, then click OK.

How to Reveal Protected Operating System Files

There is a third, extremely secretive tier of hidden files in Windows. Even if you complete Method 1 and Method 2, Microsoft will still refuse to show you “Protected Operating System Files.” These are the files that control the absolute core boot sequence of the motherboard.

Massive Warning: Do not touch these files unless you are following a highly specific, advanced repair tutorial. Deleting them will brick your computer.

1. Follow the steps in Method 2 to open the Folder Options menu, and click the View tab.
2. Scroll down the “Advanced settings” list.
3. Look for a checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
4. Uncheck that box.
5. A terrifying warning message will instantly pop up, asking if you are absolutely sure you want to display these sensitive files. Click Yes.
6. Click Apply and OK.

Your hard drive will now display every single byte of data it holds, with absolutely nothing obscured.
