There are few things more embarrassing than sitting in a dark movie theater and realizing your iPhone’s flashlight is blazing out of your pocket like a spotlight. Because Apple placed a dedicated flashlight button directly on the iPhone lock screen, it is incredibly easy to accidentally trigger the extremely bright LED array while reaching into your purse or pulling the phone out of your jeans.
There are three different ways to turn off the iPhone flashlight, depending on whether your phone is locked, unlocked, or completely out of reach.
Method 1: The Lock Screen Shortcut (The Fastest Way)
If you just pulled your phone out of your pocket and the flashlight is on, you do not even need to type in your passcode to turn it off.
- Tap the screen once (or press the side power button) to wake up the iPhone display.
- Look at the absolute bottom left corner of the screen. You will see a circular icon depicting a small flashlight.
- Firmly press and hold that icon for one second. (Do not just tap it lightly; it requires a deep, intentional press to prevent accidental triggers).
You will feel a small physical vibration (haptic feedback), the icon will turn dark, and the physical LED on the back of the phone will instantly turn off.
Method 2: The Control Center (The Adjustable Way)
If you are actively using your phone (e.g., reading an email or browsing the web) when you realize the flashlight is on, you do not need to lock the phone to turn it off. You can use the master Control Center.
- Swipe your finger diagonally down from the top right corner of the screen (where the battery icon is).
- The Control Center menu will drop down. Look for the small flashlight icon (usually located near the bottom left of the grid).
- Tap the icon once to turn it off.
Pro Tip: If you ever need to use the flashlight but find it too blindingly bright, do not just tap the icon. Press and hold the flashlight icon in the Control Center. A massive vertical slider will appear, allowing you to manually adjust the brightness level from Level 1 (dim) to Level 4 (blinding).
Method 3: The Secret Siri Voice Command (The Hands-Free Way)
If you dropped your phone under the couch, or if your hands are covered in grease while working on a car engine, you do not need to physically touch the screen to kill the light.
- Say loudly: “Hey Siri, turn off the flashlight.”
Siri will instantly cut the power to the LED array and reply, “Okay, the flashlight is off.” You can also use this exact same command in reverse (“Hey Siri, turn on the flashlight”) when walking into a completely pitch-black room where you cannot even find your phone.
How to Remove the Lock Screen Button Entirely
If you are constantly turning the flashlight on by accident while the phone is in your pocket, and it is draining your battery, you can physically remove the button from the lock screen (requires iOS 18 or newer).
- Lock your iPhone, then tap the screen to wake it up.
- Press and hold the empty space in the center of the lock screen until the “Customize” menu appears.
- Tap Customize, then tap the Lock Screen preview.
- Look at the flashlight icon in the bottom left corner. A small minus (–) symbol will appear next to it.
- Tap the minus symbol to delete the button permanently, then tap Done in the top right corner.
