Navigating the modern internet without an ad blocker is a miserable experience. News websites are littered with auto-playing video commercials, recipe blogs force you to scroll past five different banner ads before you see the ingredients, and malicious pop-ups can actively trick you into downloading viruses. Blocking these ads does not just clean up your screen; it actually makes Chrome run significantly faster and dramatically improves your computer’s security.
Because Google relies on advertising for 80% of its corporate revenue, the Chrome browser does not actually have a built-in master switch to completely eliminate ads. While Chrome does have a basic “intrusive ads” filter buried in its settings, it only blocks the absolute worst offenders. To achieve a perfectly clean, ad-free internet, you must install a dedicated third-party extension.
The Absolute Best Ad Blocker: uBlock Origin
If you search the Chrome Web Store for “Ad Blocker,” you will see dozens of results (like Adblock Plus or AdGuard). Many of these older extensions have secretly struck deals with advertising companies, accepting money to “whitelist” certain ads and let them bypass the filter. The only extension trusted universally by cybersecurity professionals is uBlock Origin.
uBlock Origin is completely free, open-source, mathematically lightweight (meaning it won’t slow down your computer), and it blocks absolutely everything.
How to Install uBlock Origin
- Open Google Chrome.
- Navigate to the official Chrome Web Store (chrome.google.com/webstore).
- In the search bar on the left side of the screen, type uBlock Origin (ensure you type “Origin,” as there are knock-off copycat extensions).
- Look for the extension with the dark red shield icon (created by the developer Raymond Hill).
- Click on it, then click the blue Add to Chrome button.
- A small confirmation pop-up will appear. Click Add extension.
The installation is instantaneous. The moment the red shield icon appears in the top right corner of your browser, you are protected. You do not need to create an account, pay a subscription, or restart the browser. Go to any news website or YouTube video; the ads will be completely gone.
How to Turn Off the Blocker for Specific Websites
Occasionally, an ad blocker works a little too well. Some websites (particularly banking portals or complex web applications) rely on background tracking scripts to function properly. If uBlock Origin accidentally breaks a website you are trying to use, or if you actively want to support a small independent blog by allowing their ads to display, you can disable the blocker for that specific domain.
- Navigate to the website you want to support (e.g., a specific news site).
- Look at the top right corner of Chrome (next to the address bar) and click the red uBlock Origin shield icon. (If you don’t see it, click the jigsaw puzzle icon first to reveal your hidden extensions).
- A small dashboard will drop down. You will see a massive blue power button icon.
- Click the blue power button.
The entire dashboard will turn grey, indicating the shield is lowered. Click the refresh button on your browser. Chrome will now load the ads on this specific website, but uBlock Origin will continue aggressively blocking ads on the rest of the internet simultaneously.
What about Chrome’s Built-in Settings?
If you absolutely refuse to install third-party extensions, you can toggle Chrome’s built-in rudimentary filter, though its effectiveness is extremely limited.
- Click the three vertical dots in the top right corner of Chrome and go to Settings.
- Click on Privacy and security > Site settings.
- Scroll all the way down and click on Additional content settings > Intrusive ads.
- Ensure the setting is toggled to Block ads on sites that show intrusive or misleading ads.
This will stop the most obnoxious pop-ups, but it will not stop standard banner ads or YouTube commercials.
