By default, every time you press the shutter button on your iPhone, the Camera app does not just capture a single still image. It actively records a 1.5-second video clip before you press the button, and another 1.5-second video clip after you press it, bundling the whole thing together with audio into a “Live Photo.”
While this feature is magical for capturing the subtle movement of a child smiling or a waterfall flowing, it has a massive drawback: Live Photos consume nearly twice as much storage space as a standard high-resolution photograph. If you take thousands of photos of static objects (like documents, food, or receipts), Live Photos will rapidly choke your iCloud storage limit. You must turn the feature off to save space.
Method 1: The Quick Toggle (For a Single Session)
If you just opened the Camera app and realize you are about to photograph a stack of boring tax documents, you can disable Live Photos instantly.
- Open the Camera app on your iPhone.
- Look at the extreme top right corner of the screen. You will see an icon consisting of three concentric circles.
- If the circles are yellow and have a slash through them, Live Photos is already off.
- If the circles are solid and have no slash, Live Photos is actively running in the background.
- Tap the three circles.
The icon will instantly acquire a diagonal slash, and the words “Live Off” will briefly flash across the top of your screen. The camera will now only capture a single, silent frame when you press the button.
Method 2: Stop Live Photos from Automatically Turning Back On
The biggest frustration users face is that Apple intentionally designed the Camera app to “forget” that you turned Live Photos off. If you use Method 1, close the Camera app, and open it again an hour later, the three circles will stubbornly turn themselves back on.
If you want the feature permanently disabled forever, you must change your master preservation settings.
- Close the Camera app entirely.
- Open the main Settings app on your iPhone (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down the long alphabetical list and tap on Camera.
- Tap on Preserve Settings.
- Look at the very bottom of the screen for the toggle switch labeled Live Photo.
- Turn this toggle switch ON (Green).
This step is highly counter-intuitive. By turning “Preserve Settings” ON, you are commanding the iPhone to remember exactly how you left the camera. Now, open the Camera app one final time and tap the three circles to turn Live Photos OFF. Because the preservation setting is active, the iPhone will freeze that “OFF” state permanently into the hardware memory. It will never turn back on unless you explicitly tap the icon again.
How to Convert an Existing Live Photo into a Still Image
If you already took 500 Live Photos on your last vacation and your iCloud storage is completely full, you can retroactively strip the heavy video data out of the files to recover space.
- Open the Photos app and select a Live Photo.
- Tap the Edit button in the top right corner.
- At the bottom of the screen, tap the Live Photo icon (the three concentric circles).
- At the top center of the screen, you will see a yellow button that simply says LIVE. Tap it.
- The yellow button will turn grey with a slash through it. Tap Done in the bottom right corner.
The iPhone will permanently delete the hidden video file and the audio track, instantly shrinking the file size by half while leaving the primary, high-resolution still image perfectly intact.
