Modern smartphone cameras are incredibly powerful, capable of taking stunning photographs in extremely low-light conditions using complex software algorithms (like Apple’s “Night Mode”). Despite this, the iPhone Camera app still defaults to an “Auto Flash” setting, meaning the harsh LED flash will frequently trigger when you least expect it, ruining the natural lighting of a sunset or blinding the people you are trying to photograph.
Turning off the flash takes only two seconds, but Apple has subtly redesigned the Camera interface over the years, meaning the button you are looking for might be hidden.
Method 1: The Quick Toggle (Top Left Corner)
If you just opened the Camera app and need to instantly kill the flash before taking a photo, use the quick toggle.
- Open the Camera app.
- Look at the extreme top left corner of the screen. You will see an icon shaped like a lightning bolt.
- Tap the lightning bolt icon.
- The icon will change to have a diagonal slash through it, and the word “Flash Off” will briefly appear on the screen.
The flash is now completely disabled for the current shooting session. However, this is often a temporary fix. Depending on your iOS version, the next time you completely close and reopen the Camera app, the flash might revert back to “Auto.”
Method 2: The Hidden Control Panel (Permanent Control)
If you want precise control over the flash, you need to open the hidden camera control drawer.
- Open the Camera app.
- Look at the top center of the screen. You will see a small, subtle arrow pointing upward ( ^ ).
- Tap the arrow (or simply swipe up anywhere on the camera viewfinder).
- A new row of circular icons will slide into view directly above the shutter button at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap the lightning bolt icon on the far left of this new menu.
- A menu will expand with three explicit choices: Auto, On, and Off.
- Tap Off.
By forcing the flash into the explicit “Off” state via this menu, the iPhone is much more likely to remember your preference for future photos.
How to Stop the Camera from Resetting
If you hate the flash and want it permanently turned off forever, but your iPhone stubbornly keeps turning it back to “Auto” every time you launch the app, you need to change your master Preservation Settings.
- Close the Camera app and open the main Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down the long list of apps and tap on Camera.
- Tap on Preserve Settings.
- Look for the toggle switch labeled Creative Controls (or Camera Mode on older iOS versions). Turn it ON (Green).
This setting forces the iPhone to remember exactly how you left the Camera app. If you turn the flash off, shoot a photo, and close the app, the flash will remain permanently off the next day, the next week, and the next month, until you explicitly turn it back on yourself.
