How to Clear the Cache on an iPhone

If your iPhone is running sluggishly, or if you keep receiving frustrating “Storage Almost Full” notifications, the first thing you should do is clear your cache. A cache is essentially a collection of temporary files—like images, website data, and scripts—that your phone downloads and saves so it can load your favorite websites faster the next time you visit them.

While this speeds up your browsing experience, over time, this hidden data can bloat into several gigabytes of wasted space, consuming precious storage and slowing down the entire operating system.

Unlike Android, Apple does not provide a single “Clear All Cache” button for the entire iPhone. Instead, you must clear the cache for your web browser (Safari) separately from your downloaded apps.

Step 1: Clear the Safari Browser Cache

Safari is the biggest culprit for hoarding cached data. Every single website you have ever visited has likely left a tiny footprint on your device. Clearing it is simple, but be warned: this will sign you out of any websites you are currently logged into (like Amazon or webmail), so ensure you know your passwords before proceeding.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down the main list (past General and Display) until you find the Apps section (or just find Safari on older iOS versions).
  3. Tap on Safari.
  4. Scroll down the Safari settings page until you see blue text that reads Clear History and Website Data. Tap it.
  5. A pop-up menu will appear asking for a timeframe. For the best results, select All history.
  6. Ensure the toggle for Close All Tabs is switched on.
  7. Tap the red Clear History button.

Your Safari browser is now completely empty. The next time you visit a website, it might take a fraction of a second longer to load, as it has to download all the images fresh.

Step 2: Clear Third-Party App Cache (Offloading)

Apps like TikTok, Instagram, and Spotify are notorious for downloading massive amounts of cached video and audio data to your phone’s internal storage. Unfortunately, iOS does not allow you to simply “delete” the cache for most third-party apps without deleting the app entirely.

Apple’s solution to this is a feature called “Offloading.” Offloading deletes the heavy core application files (and the bloated cache) but permanently saves your personal login data and documents. This is significantly better than simply deleting the app.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap on General.
  3. Tap on iPhone Storage.
  4. Wait a few moments for the screen to calculate your storage. You will see a list of apps arranged from largest to smallest.
  5. Tap on an app that is taking up an unusually large amount of space (e.g., TikTok).
  6. Look at the two numbers at the top: App Size (the actual software) and Documents & Data (the cached files and your personal data). If the Documents & Data number is massive, it is time to offload.
  7. Tap the blue Offload App button.
  8. Confirm the action by tapping Offload App again.

The app will disappear from your phone, but its icon will remain on your home screen with a tiny cloud symbol next to it. Whenever you want to use the app again, simply tap the icon. The iPhone will quickly redownload a fresh, clean, cache-free version of the app from the App Store, and log you right back in using your saved data.

By regularly clearing Safari and offloading bloated social media apps, you can easily reclaim gigabytes of storage space and keep your iPhone running smoothly.
