How to Hide the Taskbar in Windows 11

The Windows taskbar is the central nervous system of the operating system, housing the Start menu, system tray, and your pinned applications. However, on laptops with smaller screens, the taskbar occupies a significant amount of valuable vertical screen real estate. If you are editing a large spreadsheet, writing code, or simply prefer a minimalist desktop aesthetic, you might want that space back.

Fortunately, Windows 11 includes a built-in feature that automatically hides the taskbar when you are not actively using it, giving you a true full-screen experience for all your applications.

How to Enable Auto-Hide for the Taskbar

Hiding the taskbar in Windows 11 is incredibly simple and can be done entirely through the modern Settings application.

  1. Right-click anywhere on an empty space on your Taskbar.
  2. A small pop-up menu will appear. Click on Taskbar settings. (Alternatively, you can press the Windows Key + I to open Settings, navigate to “Personalization,” and then click “Taskbar”).
  3. The Settings app will open directly to the Taskbar configuration page.
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the Taskbar behaviors section to expand it.
  5. Check the box located next to Automatically hide the taskbar.

The moment you check that box, your taskbar will immediately slide downward and disappear off the bottom edge of your screen.

How to Access the Hidden Taskbar

Hiding the taskbar does not disable it; it merely moves it out of sight until you need it.

To access your Start menu or pinned applications, simply move your mouse cursor to the very bottom edge of your screen. The taskbar will instantly slide back up into view. As soon as you move your mouse cursor away from the taskbar area to click on an application, it will slide back down and hide itself again.

Troubleshooting: Why Won’t My Taskbar Hide?

Even with the auto-hide feature enabled, you may occasionally find that the taskbar stubbornly refuses to slide away. This is almost always caused by a background application demanding your attention.

Windows is programmed to keep the taskbar visible if an application needs you to look at something. Check for the following common culprits:

  • Flashing Application Icons: If an application (like Microsoft Teams or Slack) receives a new message, its icon on the taskbar will flash orange. You must click the icon and view the notification before the taskbar will hide again.
  • System Tray Notifications: Look at the far right side of the taskbar (the system tray). If an app like an antivirus scanner or a cloud backup tool has generated a pop-up warning, the taskbar will remain locked on screen until you acknowledge or dismiss the notification.
  • Hidden Icons Menu: Sometimes, the application demanding attention is hidden inside the system tray overflow menu. Click the small “up arrow” icon in the system tray to check if any hidden background apps require your attention.

If you have checked all your applications and the taskbar is still stuck, a temporary glitch in Windows Explorer is likely the cause. Simply restarting your computer will resolve the issue.
