How to Stop Microsoft Word from Automatically Shrinking Fonts in Text Boxes

When designing a flyer, a brochure, or a complex layout in Microsoft Word, you will frequently use “Text Boxes” to position blocks of text exactly where you want them on the page. However, you might encounter a deeply frustrating behavior: as you type more text into the box, Word suddenly decides to automatically shrink the font size of your text smaller and smaller so that it all fits inside the boundaries of the box.

This “Shrink text on overflow” feature is designed to prevent text from spilling out and disappearing, but it completely ruins your document’s typography. If you have carefully selected a 14pt Arial font for readability, having the software silently squash it down to an 8pt font makes the document look incredibly unprofessional and inconsistent.

You can force the text box to respect your explicitly chosen font size, requiring the box itself to either expand or simply hide the overflowing text instead of shrinking it.

How to Stop Word from Shrinking Text in Text Boxes

You must adjust the specific formatting properties of the text box itself.

1. Open your document in Microsoft Word.
2. Click anywhere on the edge of the offending Text Box to select it. (The border should become a solid line).
3. Right-click on the solid border of the text box and select Format Shape from the context menu.
4. A “Format Shape” pane will slide out on the right side of the screen.
5. At the top of the pane, click on the Layout & Properties icon (it looks like a blue square with white text lines).
6. Expand the Text Box section.
7. Look under the “AutoFit” options. You will likely see that “Shrink text on overflow” is currently selected.
8. Change the selection to either Do not Autofit (which keeps the box the same size and hides extra text) or Resize shape to fit text (which allows the box to expand downward as you type).

Microsoft Word will instantly restore your text to its original, intended font size. Your typography will remain perfectly consistent, giving you total control over the exact size and layout of your document’s content.
