Whenever you attempt to sign up for a new website or change an existing password, Microsoft Edge intercepts your clicks. If you click into a “New Password” text box, Edge automatically displays a massive dropdown menu offering to generate and save a highly complex, randomized “Strong Password” for you.
While utilizing strong, unique passwords is a critical security best practice, Edge’s built-in password generator is incredibly annoying if you already use a superior third-party password manager like 1Password or Bitwarden. Having Edge constantly try to overwrite or interfere with your dedicated password manager’s popups leads to confusion and occasionally results in lost credentials if they are saved to the wrong vault.
You can configure Microsoft Edge to completely disable its built-in password generator, allowing your preferred password manager to operate without interference.
How to Turn Off Password Suggestions in Edge
You must modify the specific password settings within your Edge Profile.
- Open the Microsoft Edge browser.
- Click the three horizontal dots in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Profiles.
- Under the “Your profile” section, click on Passwords.
- Scroll down the page until you find the toggle switch labeled Suggest strong passwords.
- Turn this toggle to the Off position.
Microsoft Edge will immediately stop interrupting your account creation process. When you click into a password box, the browser will remain silent, giving your dedicated third-party password extension the exclusive right to suggest and save your new credentials.
