Microsoft Edge includes a quick-access productivity tool called the “Mini Menu.” Whenever you highlight a block of text on a webpage using your mouse, a small, floating context menu automatically appears right next to your cursor, offering instant shortcuts to “Copy,” “Search,” and “Define.”
While this is designed to save you from having to right-click, it is incredibly intrusive for users who highlight text simply to keep their place while reading, or users who already use keyboard shortcuts (like Ctrl+C). Having a tooltip constantly popping up over the text you are trying to read completely breaks your concentration and clutters the interface.
You can turn off the automatic Mini Menu trigger, ensuring the menu only appears when you explicitly request it.
How to Turn Off the Text Selection Mini Menu
You can disable this pop-up within the Edge Appearance settings.
- Open the Microsoft Edge browser.
- Click the three horizontal dots in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Appearance.
- Scroll down the right pane until you find the “Context menus” section.
- Look for the toggle switch labeled Show mini menu when selecting text.
- Turn this toggle to the Off position.
Microsoft Edge will immediately stop interrupting your reading. The next time you highlight a paragraph of text, nothing will happen. If you still want to access the options, you can simply right-click the highlighted text to open the standard, full-sized context menu.
