When you fill out a shipping form on a website, Microsoft Edge silently captures that data (your name, street address, phone number, and email). The next time you visit a different website and click on an empty text box, Edge will automatically pop up a massive dropdown menu offering to instantly autofill the entire form using your saved personal information.
While autofill is a massive time-saver for repetitive online shopping, it is a significant privacy risk if you share your computer with other people. You likely do not want your roommates, coworkers, or children to be able to instantly pull up your personal phone number, private email addresses, or home address simply by clicking a text box.
You can completely disable Edge’s form-filling engine to ensure your personal data is never volunteered on a web page.
How to Turn Off Form Autofill in Edge
You must delete your saved data and disable the autofill toggle in the Profiles menu.
- Open the Microsoft Edge browser.
- Click the three horizontal dots in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Profiles.
- Under the “Your profile” section, click on Personal info (or Addresses and more on older versions).
- At the top of the page, locate the toggle switch labeled Save and fill custom info (or Save and fill addresses).
- Turn this toggle to the Off position.
- (Optional) Scroll down the page to the list of saved addresses. Click the three dots next to any existing address profiles and select Delete to purge your data from the browser entirely.
Microsoft Edge will instantly stop monitoring text boxes. The next time you encounter a checkout form, you will have to manually type out your entire address, guaranteeing your personal data remains private.
