Microsoft Edge incorporates a robust security system known as Microsoft Defender SmartScreen. This cloud-based engine constantly scans every file you attempt to download, comparing it against a massive database of known malware and “uncommonly downloaded” files. If it flags a file as suspicious, Edge will automatically block the download, displaying a harsh red warning that the file is unsafe and refusing to save it to your hard drive.
While this is an excellent safety net for novice users, it can be infuriating for developers, system administrators, or power users. If you are compiling your own executables, downloading niche open-source software from GitHub, or sharing beta builds of a program, SmartScreen will frequently generate “false positives,” blocking your perfectly safe files simply because they aren’t famous enough to be on Microsoft’s whitelist.
If you trust your own judgment over Microsoft’s automated filters, you can completely disable the SmartScreen download blocker.
How to Turn Off SmartScreen Download Blocking
You can disable this security feature within the Privacy and Services menu.
- Open the Microsoft Edge browser.
- Click the three horizontal dots in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Privacy, search, and services.
- Scroll down to the section labeled “Security.”
- Look for the toggle switch labeled Microsoft Defender SmartScreen.
- Turn this toggle to the Off position.
- (Optional) You should also turn off the toggle labeled Block potentially unwanted apps to ensure Edge doesn’t silently discard installers that bundle adware.
Microsoft Edge will no longer intercept your file transfers. Every time you click a download link, the browser will unconditionally save the file to your hard drive, regardless of the file type or its reputation on the internet.
