How to Stop Your Mac from Automatically Adding Calendar Events from Mail

Apple’s ecosystem is heavily integrated, which sometimes leads to unintended consequences. If you use the native Apple Mail app on your Mac, the software constantly scans the text of your incoming emails using natural language processing. If it detects a date, time, and location (e.g., “Dinner at 7 PM on Friday at Dorsia”), macOS will automatically extract that data and quietly add a tentative event directly into your Apple Calendar.

While this is intended to be a helpful assistant feature, it often clutters your calendar with useless garbage. Automated spam emails offering “Limited Time Sales ending Friday!” or flight itineraries that were canceled months ago will frequently spawn phantom events on your calendar, causing your Mac and iPhone to constantly alert you for events you never agreed to attend.

You can disable this cross-app scanning feature to ensure only events you manually create end up on your calendar.

How to Stop Mail from Adding Calendar Events

You must disable this automation from within the Mail application preferences.

  1. Open the Mail app on your Mac.
  2. Click on the word Mail in the top-left corner of the menu bar.
  3. Select Settings… (or Preferences) from the drop-down menu.
  4. Click on the General tab at the top of the window.
  5. Look for a drop-down menu labeled Add invitations to Calendar.
  6. By default, this is likely set to “Automatically.” Click the drop-down menu and change it to Never.
  7. Close the Settings window.

macOS will no longer scrape your inbox for dates and times. If someone emails you an invitation, you will now have to manually click the attached .ics file to add it to your calendar, giving you complete control over your schedule.
