By default, Microsoft Edge functions as a basic password manager. Every single time you type your credentials into a website and click “Log In,” Edge intercepts the action and drops a massive popup window from the address bar, offering to save the password for future use.
If you use a dedicated third-party password manager (such as Bitwarden, 1Password, or LastPass) to securely manage your credentials, this native Edge behavior is completely redundant. The constant popup prompts are annoying, block the top portion of the website you are trying to view, and can easily result in you accidentally saving a secure password in plaintext within your browser’s local cache.
To streamline your login experience, you should disable Edge’s password prompt and rely solely on your third-party extension.
How to Disable Password Prompts in Edge
You can turn off this feature in the Edge Wallet settings.
- Open the Microsoft Edge browser.
- Click the three horizontal dots in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Profiles.
- Under the “Your profile” section, click on Passwords.
- Look for the very first toggle switch on the page, labeled Offer to save passwords.
- Turn this toggle to the Off position.
Microsoft Edge will instantly stop asking to save your credentials. When you log into a website, the browser will remain completely silent, allowing your third-party password manager to handle the prompt natively without any interference.
