Android smartphones include a helpful accessibility feature designed for hands-free environments. When you receive an incoming phone call, the operating system can automatically use text-to-speech to read the caller’s name or phone number out loud before the ringtone even finishes playing.
While this is incredibly useful if your phone is mounted on your dashboard while driving, it is a privacy disaster in an office environment. If you are sitting in a quiet meeting room and your phone suddenly screams, “Incoming call from Mom,” everyone in the room will hear it, even if you dive across the desk to silence the ringtone.
If you prefer your phone to ring normally without announcing the caller to the entire room, you can easily disable the Caller ID announcement feature.
How to Turn Off Caller ID Announcements
This setting is typically located within the native Phone dialer application.
- Open the default Phone app on your Android device.
- Tap the three vertical dots in the top-right corner of the dialer screen.
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the Settings list and tap on Caller ID announcement (usually located under an “Advanced” heading).
- Tap on Announce caller ID.
- A pop-up menu will appear with three options: Always, Only when using a headset, and Never.
- Select Never to completely disable the feature. (Or, select Only when using a headset if you still want it while wearing earbuds).
Your phone will immediately stop using the robotic text-to-speech voice. The next time you receive a call, it will simply vibrate or play your chosen ringtone, keeping the caller’s identity strictly private.
