To help users manage massive amounts of open webpages, Microsoft Edge features a built-in tab grouping system. Recently, Edge began utilizing AI to try and guess which tabs belong together. If you open several links from the same website, or research a specific topic, Edge will automatically bundle those tabs together into a color-coded “Tab Group,” collapsing them into a single heading on your tab bar.
While some users find this helpful for organization, it can be incredibly disorienting if you prefer a flat, standard tab layout. Having tabs spontaneously disappear into collapsed groups makes it very difficult to quickly click back and forth between references, forcing you to constantly expand and collapse the groups.
If you prefer to organize your own tabs manually, you can disable Edge’s automatic grouping AI.
How to Turn Off Automatic Tab Grouping
This setting is located in the core Appearance menu of the browser.
- Open the Microsoft Edge browser.
- Click the three horizontal dots in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Appearance.
- Scroll down to the “Customize browser” section.
- Look for a toggle switch labeled Automatically group related tabs.
- Turn this toggle to the Off position.
Once disabled, Edge will stop trying to predict your workflow. Every new tab you open will simply append to the end of the tab bar, exactly where you expect it to be, leaving the grouping entirely up to you.
