The Windows 11 Taskbar is designed to be sleek and minimalist. To achieve this look, Microsoft employs a feature called the “Taskbar corner overflow.” If you have multiple background apps running—such as Spotify, Discord, Steam, or your antivirus software—Windows will automatically hide their icons inside a hidden menu (accessible by clicking the small up-arrow near the clock).
While this keeps your screen looking tidy, it can be incredibly annoying for power users. If you need to quickly check the status of your VPN connection, or if you want to instantly see if a cloud backup is currently syncing, you have to perform an extra click every single time just to see your active programs.
If you prefer utility over minimalism, you can force Windows 11 to display all of your system tray icons permanently.
How to Stop Windows from Hiding Tray Icons
You can manage which icons are allowed to remain visible in the Taskbar settings.
- Right-click on any empty space on the Taskbar at the bottom of your screen.
- Click on Taskbar settings from the small pop-up menu.
- In the Settings window that opens, scroll down and click to expand the Taskbar corner overflow section. (In newer versions of Windows 11, this section might be called Other system tray icons).
- You will see a list of every application installed on your PC that is capable of running in the system tray, with an On/Off toggle switch next to each one.
- To make a specific app (like Discord or your VPN) permanently visible, find it in the list and flip the toggle to On.
- (Optional): If you are using an older build of Windows 11 (or Windows 10), you might see a master toggle at the very top of the list labeled Always show all icons in the notification area. Turning this on will instantly force every hidden icon onto the main taskbar, completely eliminating the hidden overflow menu.
