If you use Google Calendar as part of a Google Workspace account (formerly G Suite), you might have noticed a frustrating automation: every time you create a new event and invite at least one other person, Google Calendar automatically generates a Google Meet video conferencing link and embeds it into the invitation.
While this is incredibly helpful if your organization exclusively uses Google Meet for remote work, it is highly confusing if you prefer to use Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or if the event is strictly an in-person meeting. Guests often get confused and click the generated Meet link instead of reading the physical address in the location field.
Fortunately, you can stop Google Calendar from proactively injecting these video links.
How to Turn Off Automatic Google Meet Links
You can disable this feature directly from the main Calendar settings page on your desktop browser.
- Open Google Calendar (calendar.google.com) on your computer.
- Click the Gear icon in the top right corner of the screen and select Settings.
- In the left-hand navigation menu, scroll down and click on Event settings.
- Look for the checkbox labeled Automatically add Google Meet video conferences to events I create.
- Uncheck this box.
Note: If you do not see this checkbox, it means your Google Workspace Administrator has locked the setting at the organizational level. You will need to contact your IT department to have them disable it for you.
What Happens Now?
The next time you create an event and add guests, the “Add Google Meet video conferencing” button will remain a clickable option, but it will not generate a link unless you explicitly click it. You are now free to paste your own Zoom links into the location field, or leave the virtual meeting space completely blank for in-person gatherings.
