How to Stop Your iPhone from Automatically Playing Apple Music When You Start Your Car

One of the most frustrating experiences for iPhone users is getting into a car, connecting to the vehicle’s Bluetooth (or plugging in a USB cable), and having Apple Music instantly start blasting the first alphabetical song in their library. This automatic playback feature is built into iOS and many car stereo systems, but it can be incredibly jarring if you prefer to listen to podcasts, Spotify, or simply enjoy a quiet drive.

While Apple does not offer a single “Stop Autoplay” master switch in the iPhone settings, there are a few highly effective workarounds to prevent this behavior.

Method 1: Turn Off Cellular Data for Apple Music

If you stream most of your music rather than downloading it locally, you can stop the app from auto-playing by cutting off its internet access.

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
2. Scroll down and tap on Music.
3. Under the “Allow Music to Access” section, tap on Cellular Data (or Mobile Data).
4. Toggle the switch to the Off position.

Now, when you enter your car, the Music app won’t be able to connect to the internet to start streaming automatically.

Method 2: Disable CarPlay (If Applicable)

If your car uses Apple CarPlay and that is triggering the auto-play behavior, you can restrict CarPlay entirely if you prefer to use a standard Bluetooth connection.

1. Open Settings > Screen Time.
2. Tap on Content & Privacy Restrictions.
3. Tap on Allowed Apps (you may need to enter your Screen Time passcode).
4. Toggle the switch next to CarPlay to the Off position.

Method 3: Delete the Apple Music App

If you exclusively use Spotify, YouTube Music, or other audio apps and never actually use Apple Music, the simplest and most permanent solution is to simply delete the app from your phone.

1. Locate the Music app on your Home Screen or App Library.
2. Press and hold the app icon.
3. Select Remove App.
4. Confirm by tapping Delete App.

Without the default Music app installed, your car stereo cannot force it to start playing. Your iPhone will remain silent until you manually open Spotify or your preferred audio app.
