Most iPhone users flip the physical mute switch on the side of their device when they walk into a movie theater, a business meeting, or go to sleep at night. While this prevents annoying spam calls from interrupting your peace, it creates a terrifying possibility: what if a family member is in an accident and desperately needs to reach you?
You do not have to choose between constant interruptions and missing a critical emergency. Apple includes a hidden feature buried deep within the Contacts app called “Emergency Bypass.” When enabled for a specific person, their phone calls and text messages will force your iPhone to ring at full volume and vibrate violently, completely ignoring your mute switch, Do Not Disturb mode, and Focus modes.
This guide explains how to enable Emergency Bypass for your most important contacts.
How to Enable Emergency Bypass
Emergency Bypass is configured on a per-contact basis, ensuring only the people you explicitly trust can override your silent mode.
- Open the Contacts app on your iPhone (or open the Phone app and tap the Contacts tab at the bottom).
- Scroll through your list and tap on the name of the person you want to whitelist (e.g., your spouse or your child).
- In the top right corner of their contact card, tap Edit.
- Scroll down the editing page and tap on the Ringtone row.
- At the very top of the Ringtone screen, you will see a toggle switch labeled Emergency Bypass. Toggle it to the On (green) position.
- Tap Done in the top right corner.
- You can now repeat the process for text messages by tapping on the Text Tone row, toggling Emergency Bypass on, and tapping Done.
- Tap Done one final time on the main contact card to save your changes.
What to Expect
Once Emergency Bypass is enabled, that specific contact has a permanent VIP pass through your iPhone’s defenses.
If you flip the physical mute switch on the side of your phone so it shows orange, and you put your phone face down on your nightstand, it will remain perfectly silent if a telemarketer calls. However, if your designated Emergency Bypass contact calls five seconds later, the phone will immediately begin ringing at the volume level currently set in your Settings app.
Because this feature is so powerful, you should use it sparingly. If you enable it for a boss or a coworker, they will possess the ability to wake you up at 3:00 AM on a Sunday, completely bypassing all of your carefully configured Do Not Disturb sleep schedules.
