If you work on a specific project every day—like a “2024 Tax Returns” folder or a “Website Assets” directory—navigating to that folder every time you open the File Explorer is incredibly inefficient. Clicking through C: > Users > Documents > Work > Projects > Current wastes valuable time.
Windows 11 includes a feature designed specifically to solve this problem called the “Quick Access” menu. Located in the left-hand navigation pane of the File Explorer, Quick Access acts as a persistent bookmark bar for your most important directories. By pinning a deeply buried folder to Quick Access, you can jump straight to it with a single click, regardless of where you are in the file system.
This guide explains how to pin and manage your favorite folders in the Windows 11 Quick Access menu.
Step 1: Locate the Folder
Before you can pin a folder, you must find it in the file system.
- Open the File Explorer (press the Windows Key + E, or click the yellow folder icon on your taskbar).
- Navigate through your hard drive until you find the specific folder you want to bookmark (e.g., your “Website Assets” folder).
- Do not open the folder. You must be looking at the outside of the folder icon.
Step 2: Pin to Quick Access
Pinning the folder is a simple one-click action.
- Right-click on the folder you want to pin.
- The new, condensed Windows 11 context menu will appear.
- Look for an icon that looks like a small push-pin, usually located near the top or bottom of the primary menu. The text next to it will say Pin to Quick access. Click it.
- (Note: If you do not see the push-pin icon immediately, click Show more options at the bottom of the menu to reveal the classic Windows 10 menu, then select Pin to Quick access).
Instantly, a shortcut to your folder will appear in the left-hand sidebar of the File Explorer, under the “Home” or “Quick access” section (indicated by a small blue star icon). This shortcut will remain there permanently, allowing you to instantly jump into that folder with one click from anywhere else on your PC.
How to Organize and Unpin Folders
As you finish projects, you will want to remove old folders to keep the Quick Access list clean and useful.
To reorder pinned folders: Click and hold any pinned folder in the left-hand sidebar, and drag it up or down to rearrange the list to your liking.
To unpin a folder: Simply right-click the shortcut in the left-hand sidebar and select Unpin from Quick access (the icon looks like a push-pin with a slash through it). This only deletes the shortcut; it does not delete your actual folder or its contents from your hard drive.
