Google Chrome is widely regarded as the fastest and most reliable web browser available. However, that speed comes at a significant cost: Chrome is notorious for consuming massive amounts of RAM (system memory). If you keep 30 tabs open simultaneously while working on a laptop with limited memory, your entire computer will eventually crawl to a halt, causing your mouse to stutter and cooling fans to scream.
When this happens, you do not have to close every single tab to restore performance. Often, the performance hit is caused by just one or two poorly optimized tabs—perhaps a news website running heavy background video advertisements, or a web application that has suffered a “memory leak.”
Just like Windows and macOS have system task managers to find runaway applications, Chrome has its own built-in Task Manager designed specifically to identify which specific tabs are hogging your system resources.
This guide explains how to use the Chrome Task Manager to pinpoint and terminate problematic websites.
Step 1: Open the Chrome Task Manager
The Chrome Task Manager is hidden deep within the browser’s settings menus, but it is very easy to access once you know the shortcut.
- Open the Google Chrome browser.
- Look for the three vertical dots (the customize and control menu) in the extreme top right corner of the window, just below the “X” button. Click it.
- Hover your mouse down to More Tools.
- In the slide-out menu, click on Task Manager.

Step 2: Identify the Resource Hogs
A new, bare-bones window will pop up. This is the command center for your browser.
Every single tab, extension, and background process running inside Chrome is listed here as a separate line item. For each item, Chrome tells you exactly how much “Memory footprint” (RAM) and “CPU” (Processing Power) it is currently consuming.
- Click the column header titled Memory footprint. This will instantly sort the list, pushing the tabs consuming the most RAM to the very top.
- If your computer fans are spinning loudly, click the CPU column header instead. This will sort the list to show which tabs are actively demanding the most processing power.
You might be shocked by what you see. A simple static Wikipedia article might consume 30MB of RAM, while an active Google Doc might consume 200MB. But a poorly coded shopping website with autoplaying video ads can easily consume over 1,000MB (1GB) of memory all by itself.
Step 3: Force Quit the Problem Tab
Once you have identified the specific tab that is strangling your computer’s performance, you can kill it instantly without affecting the rest of your browsing session.
- Click once on the offending line item in the Task Manager to highlight it in blue.
- Click the blue End process button in the bottom right corner of the window.
The tab will not actually close. Instead, if you navigate back to that specific tab in your main browser window, you will see a grey screen featuring a sad folder icon with the message “Aw, Snap!” This indicates the heavy background code has been violently terminated and the RAM has been returned to your system. If you need to view that page again, simply click the refresh button to reload it from scratch.
