How to Share Your Apple Music Subscription with Family Members on iPhone

If you and your partner, children, or siblings all listen to music on your iPhones, paying for three or four separate individual Apple Music subscriptions is a massive waste of money. Apple offers a specific “Family” subscription tier that allows up to six people to share a single account for significantly less than the cost of two individual subscriptions.

Crucially, sharing an Apple Music Family subscription does not mean you all share the same music library. Once properly configured, every family member uses their own personal Apple ID. They get their own personalized algorithmic playlists, their own separate music libraries, and their own listening histories. Your heavy metal recommendations will not infect your partner’s classical music profile.

This guide explains how to upgrade to the Family plan and properly invite your family members using Family Sharing on your iPhone.

Step 1: Upgrade to the Apple Music Family Plan

If you are currently on an Individual or Student plan, you must first upgrade your tier. The person who upgrades the plan is designated as the “Organizer” and will be billed for the entire family.

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
2. Tap your Name/Apple ID profile at the very top of the screen.
3. Tap on Subscriptions.
4. Look under the “Active” list and tap on Apple Music.
5. Tap on See All Plans.
6. Select the Family option. You will be prompted to authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID to confirm the new monthly price.

Step 2: Set Up Family Sharing

Simply buying the Family plan does not automatically give anyone access. You must use Apple’s overarching “Family Sharing” feature to invite people to your group.

1. Go back to the main page of the Settings app.
2. Tap your Name/Apple ID profile at the top.
3. Tap on Family Sharing. (If you have never used it before, tap “Set up your Family” and follow the initial prompts).
4. In the top right corner, tap the add member icon (a small silhouette of a person with a plus sign).
5. Tap Invite Others.

You can now send an invitation to your family members via iMessage, email, or by handing them the phone to type in their Apple ID credentials directly. They must accept the invitation on their own device to join the group.

Step 3: Verify the Subscription is Shared

Once your family members have accepted the invitation and joined your Family group, you need to ensure Apple Music is actively toggled on for sharing.

1. In the Family Sharing menu (Settings > Your Name > Family Sharing), look for the section labeled “More To Share” or “Shared with Your Family.”
2. Tap on Subscriptions.
3. Ensure that Apple Music is listed under the “Shared Subscriptions” section. If it is not, tap it and toggle on the switch to share it with the group.

How Family Members Access the Music

Once the setup is complete, the process for your family members is entirely automated. They do not need a password, and they do not need to log into your account.

They simply open the official Apple Music app on their own iPhone, iPad, or Mac while logged into their own personal Apple ID. The app will automatically recognize that their Apple ID is part of a Family Sharing group with an active subscription, and it will grant them full, unlimited access instantly.
