Handing your unlocked phone to a friend so they can look at a specific photo, or letting a child play a game on your device, always comes with a slight feeling of anxiety. You never know if they are going to accidentally (or intentionally) swipe away from the current screen and start scrolling through your private text messages, opening your banking app, or deleting important emails.
Android has a brilliant, built-in security feature designed specifically for this scenario called “App Pinning.” When you pin an app, it locks the phone’s screen to that single application. The user cannot access the home screen, open the recent apps menu, or view incoming notifications until they enter your device’s PIN or fingerprint.
This guide explains how to enable and use App Pinning on your Android device to share your screen safely.
How to Enable App Pinning in Settings
Before you can pin an app, you must first enable the feature deep within your Android security settings. (Note: The exact names of these menus might vary slightly depending on your phone manufacturer, such as Samsung vs. Google Pixel, but the process is nearly identical).
- Open the Settings app on your Android phone.
- Scroll down and tap on Security & privacy (or just Security).
- Look for a section titled More security settings or Advanced settings and tap it.
- Scroll to the very bottom of the list and tap on App pinning.
- Toggle the switch at the top of the screen to On.
- Immediately below that, ensure the second toggle labeled Ask for PIN before unpinning is also turned On. This is crucial; without this second toggle, anyone can unpin the app simply by holding two buttons.
How to Pin an App to Your Screen
Once the feature is enabled in your settings, you can pin any app at a moment’s notice before handing your phone over.
- Open the specific app you want to lock the screen to (e.g., the Photos app or a mobile game).
- Open your Recent Apps overview.
- If you use gesture navigation: Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold your finger in the middle of the screen for a second.
- If you use 3-button navigation: Tap the square button at the bottom of the screen.
- At the top of the app preview card, tap the circular app icon.
- A drop-down menu will appear. Tap Pin.
A small pop-up will confirm that the app is pinned. You can now safely hand your phone to anyone. If they try to swipe home, pull down the notification shade, or open a different app, the phone will simply ignore their input and display a small message reminding them the screen is pinned.
How to Unpin the App
When you get your phone back, you must unpin the app to resume normal use.
- If you use gesture navigation: Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold.
- If you use 3-button navigation: Press and hold both the Back (triangle) and Recent Apps (square) buttons simultaneously.
The screen will immediately lock, and you will be taken to your standard lock screen. You must enter your PIN, pattern, or use your fingerprint to unlock the device, ensuring that only you can regain full access to the phone.
