Siri is deeply integrated into macOS, allowing you to create calendar events, search for files, change system settings, or query the web using natural language. However, interacting with Siri usually requires speaking out loud. If you are working in a quiet office, studying in a library, or simply do not want to broadcast your web searches to your housemates, talking to your computer is not a viable option.
Fortunately, Apple includes an accessibility feature that completely changes how Siri operates. By enabling “Type to Siri,” you can use the intelligent assistant silently via a text box, making it function more like an advanced, natural-language version of Spotlight search.
This guide explains how to enable Type to Siri on your Mac and how to use it effectively without making a sound.
How to Enable Type to Siri
Because Apple considers Type to Siri an accessibility feature for users with speech impairments, it is not located in the standard Siri settings menu. You must dive into the Accessibility options to turn it on.
- Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of your screen.
- Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older versions of macOS).
- In the left-hand sidebar, scroll down and click on Accessibility.
- In the main Accessibility window, scroll down to the “General” section and click on Siri.
- At the top of this menu, you will see a toggle switch labeled Type to Siri. Click the toggle to turn it On.
How to Use Siri Silently
Now that the feature is enabled, triggering Siri works exactly the same way it always has, but the interface will look slightly different.
To summon Siri, you can either:
- Click the colorful Siri icon in the top right corner of your Mac menu bar.
- Press and hold the microphone/dictation key (F5) on your Mac keyboard.
- Press the custom keyboard shortcut you have assigned in your Siri settings.
When Siri appears in the top right corner of your screen, it will no longer display a pulsing audio waveform. Instead, it will display a text box with a blinking cursor. Simply type your request on your keyboard (e.g., “Remind me to call John at 3 PM” or “Turn on Do Not Disturb”) and press Enter.
Siri will instantly execute the command and display the results visually on the screen.
How to Mute Siri’s Voice Responses
There is one catch to enabling Type to Siri: while you are now inputting commands silently, Siri might still speak the answers out loud (e.g., “Okay, I’ve scheduled your reminder”). If you are in a library, this completely defeats the purpose of typing silently.
To ensure the entire interaction is completely silent, you must disable Siri’s spoken responses.
- Open System Settings again.
- In the left sidebar, click on Siri & Spotlight.
- Locate the option labeled Siri Responses and click the Siri Responses… button.
- Change the “Spoken responses” setting from “Always” to Off.
With both settings applied, Siri transforms from a noisy voice assistant into a powerful, completely silent text-based productivity tool that you can use anywhere without disturbing those around you.
