How to Disable the “Sticky Keys” Warning Popup in Windows 11

If you are a PC gamer, you have almost certainly encountered this frustrating scenario: you are in the middle of a tense match, repeatedly tapping the Shift key to sprint or dodge, when suddenly your game minimizes. A loud warning beep plays, and a Windows dialogue box appears in the center of your screen asking, “Do you want to turn on Sticky Keys?” By the time you click “No” and return to your game, your character is already dead.

Sticky Keys is an important accessibility feature designed for users who have difficulty holding down multiple keys (like Ctrl+Alt+Delete) simultaneously. By design, Windows 11 constantly monitors your keyboard and automatically triggers this feature if you press the Shift key five times in rapid succession.

While the accessibility feature itself is valuable, the automatic shortcut trigger is a nightmare for gamers and fast typists. Fortunately, you can disable the five-tap trigger shortcut without disabling the Sticky Keys feature itself.

How to Disable the Sticky Keys Shortcut in Settings

Windows 11 makes it relatively simple to disable the keyboard shortcut trigger through the modern Settings app.

  1. Click the Start button on your taskbar and select the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + I on your keyboard).
  2. In the left-hand sidebar of the Settings app, scroll down and click on Accessibility.
  3. In the Accessibility menu on the right, scroll down to the “Interaction” section and click on Keyboard.
  4. You will see a toggle switch for Sticky Keys. Do not click the toggle switch yet. Turning this off only disables the feature; it does not disable the shortcut that triggers the warning popup.
  5. Instead, click directly on the words Sticky keys (or the small arrow next to the toggle switch) to open the advanced menu for this specific feature.
  6. Locate the option labeled Keyboard shortcut for Sticky keys.
  7. Click the toggle switch next to this option to turn it Off.

That is all it takes. You can now tap the Shift key fifty times in a row while gaming or typing, and Windows will completely ignore it. The popup dialogue will never appear again.

How to Disable the Filter Keys Shortcut (The Other Annoyance)

While you are in the Keyboard Accessibility settings, it is highly recommended that you disable a secondary, equally frustrating shortcut: Filter Keys.

Filter Keys is designed to ignore brief or repeated keystrokes (useful for users with hand tremors). However, if you press and hold the right Shift key for eight seconds straight, Windows will trigger a loud beep and a similar popup warning.

To disable this trigger as well:

  1. Navigate back to the main Accessibility > Keyboard menu in the Settings app.
  2. Click directly on the words Filter keys (not the main toggle switch) to open its advanced menu.
  3. Locate the option labeled Keyboard shortcut for Filter keys.
  4. Click the toggle switch to turn it Off.

By disabling both the Sticky Keys and Filter Keys keyboard shortcuts, you ensure that Windows 11 will never interrupt your workflow or gaming sessions with unexpected accessibility warnings, no matter how frantically you press the Shift key.
