How to Pin Items to the Clipboard in Windows 11

Copying and pasting text is one of the most fundamental actions you take on a computer. However, the traditional Windows clipboard has a major limitation: it only remembers the very last thing you copied. If you copy a password, and then copy a link, the password is gone forever. Windows 11 solves this problem with the Clipboard History feature, which remembers multiple copied items. Even better, it allows you to “pin” specific pieces of text or images so they are permanently saved, even after you restart your computer. Pinning is incredibly useful for things you paste constantly, like your email address, a complex macro, or a frequently used emoji.

How to Enable Clipboard History

Before you can pin items, you must ensure the Clipboard History feature is actually turned on.

1. Click the Start button and open the Settings app (the gear icon).
2. In the left-hand sidebar, ensure System is selected.
3. Scroll down the right side of the window and click on Clipboard.
4. Look for the toggle switch labeled Clipboard history. Click it so that it turns On.

Your computer will now start remembering the text, HTML, and images (under 4MB) that you copy.

How to Pin an Item to the Clipboard

Now that history is enabled, you can start saving your favorite snippets.

1. Highlight some text (like an email address) and copy it as you normally would by pressing Ctrl + C or right-clicking and selecting Copy.
2. Press the Windows Key + V on your keyboard. This is the shortcut to open the Clipboard History panel.
3. A small window will pop up near your cursor showing a list of your recently copied items.
4. Find the item you just copied (it should be at the top of the list).
5. Look closely at that item’s box in the panel. You will see a small Pin icon (it looks like a pushpin).
6. Click the Pin icon. The pin will turn solid black or white, indicating it is locked in place.

Why Pinning is Useful

When you click the “Clear all” button in the Clipboard History panel, or when you shut down or restart your computer, Windows normally deletes everything in the clipboard memory for security reasons.

However, pinned items are never deleted. They act as permanent templates. You can press Windows Key + V at any time tomorrow, next week, or next month, and that pinned email address will still be sitting right there at the top of your history, ready to be pasted with a single click.

How to Unpin an Item

If you no longer need quick access to a saved item, you can remove it.

1. Press Windows Key + V to open the panel.
2. Locate your pinned item.
3. Click the solid Pin icon again. It will change back to an outline, meaning it is no longer protected.
4. It will now be deleted the next time you clear your history or restart your PC. You can also click the three dots (…) next to the pin icon and select the garbage can icon to delete it immediately.
