When you are traveling, working from a coffee shop with unreliable Wi-Fi, or simply experiencing a home internet outage, your iPhone can act as a portable router. The “Personal Hotspot” feature allows you to broadcast your iPhone’s cellular data connection as a secure Wi-Fi network, allowing your laptop, iPad, or a friend’s device to get online anywhere you have cell service.
How to Enable Your Personal Hotspot
Before you begin, make sure your iPhone is connected to your cellular network (you should see 5G, LTE, or 4G at the top of your screen).
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap on Personal Hotspot. (If you don’t see this option immediately, tap on Cellular first, and it should be listed there).
- Toggle the switch next to Allow Others to Join so that it turns green.
- Directly below that toggle, you will see your Wi-Fi Password. This is a randomly generated password created by Apple. You can tap on it to change it to something easier to type if you prefer.
- Your hotspot is now active and broadcasting! The name of the Wi-Fi network will be the name of your iPhone (e.g., “John’s iPhone”).
How to Connect Another Device to Your Hotspot
Connecting a laptop or tablet to your newly created hotspot works exactly the same as connecting to a normal home router.
- On your laptop or tablet, open the Wi-Fi menu.
- Look for the name of your iPhone in the list of available networks (e.g., “John’s iPhone”) and click to connect.
- When prompted, enter the Wi-Fi Password that is displayed on your iPhone’s Personal Hotspot screen.
- Once connected, a green indicator bubble will appear in the top left corner of your iPhone’s screen (or a green pill shape on older models) to let you know a device is actively using your data.
Important Things to Know About Using a Hotspot
- Battery Drain: Broadcasting a Wi-Fi signal takes a tremendous amount of energy. Using your phone as a hotspot will drain its battery very quickly. It is highly recommended to plug your iPhone into a charger while using this feature.
- Data Limits: Any device connected to your hotspot is using your iPhone’s cellular data plan. If you do not have unlimited data, a laptop downloading a large software update could consume your entire monthly data allowance in minutes. Always monitor your usage.
- Automatic Disconnects: To save battery, the iPhone will automatically turn off the hotspot broadcast if no devices have been connected to it for a few minutes. To reconnect, you usually just need to open the Settings > Personal Hotspot page on your iPhone to “wake up” the signal again.
