How to Turn On or Off the Touchpad in Windows 11

The touchpad is an essential component of any Windows 11 laptop, allowing you to navigate the operating system without needing an external peripheral. However, there are times when you might want to completely disable it. For instance, if you are a heavy typist and find that your palms constantly brush against the touchpad, causing the cursor to jump across the screen. Alternatively, you might have accidentally disabled it and find yourself stuck without a working mouse. Windows 11 allows you to easily toggle the touchpad on or off through the Settings app.

Using the Settings App

This is the most reliable software method to control your touchpad hardware.

  1. Click the Start button on your taskbar.
  2. Click the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + I on your keyboard).
  3. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Bluetooth & devices.
  4. In the main pane, scroll down and click on Touchpad.
  5. At the very top of the Touchpad settings page, you will see a master toggle switch.
  6. Simply click the toggle to turn the Touchpad Off or On.

The “Leave On When Mouse is Connected” Feature

If you only want the touchpad disabled when you are sitting at your desk with a physical mouse, you do not need to manually flip the switch every day. Windows has an automated feature for this scenario.

  1. On the same Touchpad settings page, ensure the main master toggle is set to On.
  2. Click the small arrow (“>”) located next to the master toggle switch to expand the menu.
  3. You will see a checkbox labelled “Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected.”
  4. Uncheck this box.

Now, Windows 11 will automatically disable your laptop’s built-in touchpad the moment you plug in a USB mouse or connect a Bluetooth mouse. The moment you disconnect the external mouse, the touchpad will instantly turn back on, ensuring you are never left without a way to navigate.

Using Keyboard Shortcuts (Hardware Keys)

Most modern laptops have a dedicated function key on the physical keyboard that toggles the touchpad on and off at a hardware level. This bypasses the Windows settings entirely.

  1. Look closely at the top row of your laptop keyboard (the F1 through F12 keys).
  2. Search for an icon that looks like a small square with a line crossed through it, or a small finger tapping a square. It is usually located on the F5, F6, F7, or F9 key, depending on the manufacturer (HP, Dell, Lenovo, ASUS).
  3. Press that key. On many laptops, you must hold down the Fn (Function) key located near your spacebar while pressing the specific F-key (e.g., Fn + F6).
  4. You should see an icon briefly flash on your screen confirming the touchpad has been disabled or enabled.
